What Is The Aurora?

Okay, the explanation requires some physics, but I'll try to keep it nice and short.

The aurora, or polar lights, is a natural light, it is not man made, and I don't use some fancy photo app to get this effect. The lights are sometimes so bright that they light up the landscape around you, a bit like a full moon.

My dad told me stories about how he and his friends used to go skiing when he was young, and they would rely on the auroras to light up their path.

Northern Lights - The What, Where and When?

A northern light corona from one of the most spectacular nights I've ever experienced

When I post Instagram pictures of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, I often get questions about this beautiful natural phenomenon . And the three most common comments and questions are along the lines of:

  1. "Wow, that's beautiful, I've never seen anything like it. What is it?"
  2. "Seeing the polar lights is on my bucket list. Where can I go to see them?"
  3. "How can I take photos of the northern lights? I've tried using my smart phone, but they don't come out as nicely as yours."

Northern Lights Photography - An Introduction

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, dancing above an old house in Norway.

I keep getting questions on Instagram about night photography, and northern lights photography in particular, so I figured I'd write up some posts to help you get started in this amazing world of photography.

Keep in mind that I am no expert on the subject, I'm just someone who loves the night and the sky, and who tries her best to capture the beauty of the night in long exposure pictures. And I love to learn, so constructive criticism is always welcomed.

Dear 2016

Both me and The Dog love snow!
Dear 2016,

It is with a heavy heart that I write these words. And I probably should do this face-to-face, but it is so much easier to get down all my thoughts in writing. If you read everything I have to say with an open mind, I hope you will understand.

Update - It's About Time

The northern lights dancing with the full mon - Picture taken Spring, 2016.

It has been far too long since I last made an update to this site. I'll try to keep this post nice and short, and I promise to update the page more frequently from now on.

I am much better at updating my Instagram account (@I_couldlivehere), so make sure you follow me there if you're interested in seeing pictures of the northern lights, the starry skies and some beautiful sunsets. And of the dog, of course.

Last time you heard from me, I had just started making my bucket list, and was hoping to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in September or early October this year. Those plans were put aside when I suddenly came across the perfect apartment. I decided to postpone all travel plans, and buy my dream home instead.

Illness, Climbing and Bouldering

It's been a while since my previous post, but the headline pretty much sums up the last couple of months.

I was right on track with training for some serious mountain summits this summer when I got knocked out by the flu about 5 weeks ago. Since I didn't have the patience to sit around and wait, I started exercising far too early, resulting in the healing process to take forever. At least I'm finally able to start jogging again this week.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've had some amazing bouldering sessions with lots of improvements. And last week I did the first outdoor climbing of this year. We have some beautiful cags around the area where I live. Hopefully we'll get lots of nice weather this season, so that we can go enjoy them.

Lately we've had some spectacular northern lights too. Unfortunately the season is coming to an end now that the days are getting longer.

Wishing you all a wonderful week with lots of fun activities!

When the skies exploded!

Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis dance
“She looked directly up into the northern lights
and she wondered if those cold-burning spectres
might not draw her breath, her very soul,
out of her chest and into the stars.”
― Eowyn Ivey

Last night was without a doubt one of the best nights of my life. We had the most amazing northern lights (Wiki link for those that want to read more about them)I have ever seen, and watching nature putting on such a spectacular show simply left me speechless.

There's no way to describe the beauty of seeing the sky explode in green and purple. And none of my pictures does it justice.

But all in all I had an awesome week with three bouldering sessions and lots of hiking with the dog.

And I have pretty much decided on the dates for my trip to Kilimanjaro. Now it's just a matter of getting all the practical stuff in order, and make sure that I'm in excellent shape to do the hike.

I wish you all a wonderful week!

For me, tonight might be another night of hunting the gorgeous Aurora Borealis - something that should be considered an extreme sport as it involves a lot of hiking in the dark through forests and unknown paths in order to find the perfect spot.

And the rest of the week will be devoted to work, training and rock climbing.

Into the woods...

Clouds reflection lake

“It would seem from this fact, that man is naturally a wild animal,
and that when taken from the woods,
he is never happy in his natural state,
'till he returns to them again.”
Benjamin Rush

As you walk through the forest, finding your own paths, you come to a small clearing looking out across a small lake.

You close your eyes, take a deep breath and just stand there, completely still for a few minutes. And your mind and body feels start to feel lighter, almost as though the nature around you is flowing through your veins, calming down your mind and decreasing your heart rate.

About

Who am I?

Just a human of the female variety who's in love with the mountains, the stars, and nature in general :)

Here you can follow my journeys and adventures, see some of the pictures I take along the way, ask questions, and if you want, share your stories and experiences from the beautiful outdoors.

sitting under the Northern Lights on a cold winter night.
You can also read more about my planned trips here. They are not set in stone but are more of long term goals. If I reach all of them, that's great! But if not, I'll still enjoy the journey. Because after all, the journey is what life is all about.

Change is coming...

Neil Gaiman Quote New Year Inspiration

I'll be making some huge changes to the site in the coming days, turning it in to more of a personal journal following some of the journeys and adventures I'll be embarking. So please don't be alarmed if you come back and find the page completely changed :)

It will be a brand new topic, though the name of the site will still be fitting. So I hope you'll want to come along and see the world. Hopefully you'll enjoy it :)

And, with the inspiring words from Neil Gaiman, "dream dangerously and outrageously"!

PS. Most of the old posts will disappear - so no more celebrity homes.

I Love Mondays!

I Love Mondays Inspirational Quote - Motivation

I love Mondays. No, I'm not joking, I actually do love Mondays. While most people are sad that the weekend is over and that they have to get back to work, I feel like Mondays need some love too.

Don't get me wrong, I love the weekends as much as the next person. And I used to hate Mondays too. I used to dread getting out of bed every Monday, and could not wait for the next Friday afternoon to come along.

Though my soul may set in darkness....

Shooting Star - Quotes - Sarah Williams, darkness night Meme

The Old Astronomer to His Pupil

"Reach me down my Tycho Brahe, I would know him when we meet,
When I share my later science, sitting humbly at his feet;
He may know the law of all things, yet be ignorant of how
We are working to completion, working on from then to now.

Pray remember that I leave you all my theory complete,
Lacking only certain data for your adding, as is meet,
And remember men will scorn it, 'tis original and true,
And the obloquy of newness may fall bitterly on you.

The only difference between the two of us
